CW&T
CW&T was founded in Brooklyn in 2009 by artists and designers Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy, who met at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. With backgrounds spanning architecture, film, engineering and computer science, they built a studio around making whatever interested them, from software and experimental clocks to beautifully engineered everyday tools. More than fifteen years later, they still live and work from the same Brooklyn studio and prototyping shop, designing, machining and testing much of what they make themselves.
That slightly obsessive approach is what makes CW&T so interesting. These guys take familiar objects, pens, clocks, jump ropes and desk tools, and rethink them from first principles, usually stripping away anything that doesn’t need to be there and engineering what remains to last for years, sometimes generations. Their jump ropes are a perfect example: minimal, fast and almost absurdly well resolved for something most brands barely think about. The work is clever without becoming clever for its own sake, beautifully made without feeling precious, and often just a little strange. Cooper Hewitt gave CW&T its National Design Award for Product Design in 2022, which makes sense. Few studios make everyday objects this technically interesting and still manage to keep them fun.
