Helko Werk
Helko Werk began in Wuppertal, Germany, in 1844, when a small forge started producing axes for the surrounding woodsmen and carpenters. The business stayed in the same region as it passed through generations of smiths, each refining the steel, forging methods and profiles that would become the company’s hallmark. More than 175 years on, Helko still produces its axes with a level of expert continuity that is increasingly rare: the same craft, the same landscape, and the same expectation that a tool should last decades, not seasons. That heritage sits at the core of everything they make.
What sets them apart today is how naturally that history translates into real-world performance. The heads are hand-forged and properly ground, the handles are shaped for control and balance, and the overall feel is reassuringly direct. Their hatchets and axes cut cleanly, hold an edge well and settle into your hand without fuss, whether you’re splitting logs or carrying one on a long weekend outdoors. There is no marketing gloss or unnecessary detail, just tools that work the way good tools should. Helko earns loyalty in the simplest way possible: by making gear that proves itself every time you pick it up.
