Hella Slingshots
Hella Slingshots was founded in San Francisco in 2011 by Adam Gray, a normal guy growing up in the woods of Northern California with a hay-bale target range behind the house and, by his own account, a fairly serious childhood arsenal. Slingshots were always his favourite. Decades later, he’s still making them by hand in San Francisco, one at a time, using real forked hardwood branches shaped, sanded and finished into something far more considered than the homemade versions most of us remember.
That handmade approach is the whole appeal. No two wooden forks are quite alike, and the natural shape of the branch dictates much of the final design, so every piece has its own character before Adam has even started sanding. They’re simple, beautifully resolved and deliberately nostalgic without becoming twee, which also makes them a genuinely great gift whether you’re buying for a kid or someone old enough to remember making one themselves. Hella has now shipped more than 250,000 slingshots, which suggests plenty of other people see the attraction too. These guys have taken one of childhood’s simplest pleasures, given it better materials and genuinely good craftsmanship, and somehow made the slingshot cool again.
