Why It Made The List
A richly researched tribute to British outdoor clothing, charting how hill-walking, climbing and mountaineering gear became its own kind of style culture. Mountain Style begins with the post-Everest outdoor boom of the 1950s, then follows the climbers and makers of the 1960s and ’70s who started building the kit they couldn’t buy. Across new studio shots, period adverts, brochures, archive photographs and interviews, it captures everything from classic Ventile smocks and down suits to early Gore-Tex and ravers’ jackets. A sharp pick for gear heads, design nerds, vintage clothing obsessives and anyone who likes their fashion with weather, purpose and a bit of British eccentricity.

MORE DETAIL
This illustrated paperback traces the evolution of British outdoor clothing from the 1953 Everest expedition through to the end of the twentieth century, exploring how specialist mountain gear became both technical equipment and cultural icon.
It follows the pioneers who began making their own climbing clothing when suitable equipment wasn't commercially available, laying the foundations for brands including Berghaus, Craghoppers, Karrimor, Mountain Equipment, Rab and Sprayway.
Alongside the history, the book features newly photographed vintage garments, archive adverts, brochures and period photography, bringing together decades of British outdoor design in one place.
Interviews with clothing designers, mountaineers and people involved in the early days of the brands are combined with extensive research and access to company archives, the Mountain Heritage Trust and the Scottish Mountain Heritage Collection.
Among the featured pieces are the down duvet taken to Everest in 1953, classic Ventile smocks, early Gore-Tex garments, down suits and other influential examples of British outdoor clothing.
