Experts Say

The finest glasses for both technical and hedonistic purposes are those made by Riedel. The effect of these glasses on fine wine is profound - Robert M. Parker. Jr.

Why It Made The List

As one of the oldest glass makers in the world (267 years and counting), Riedel's knowledge is unsurpassed; a fact that's clearly evident in their Extreme Cabernet line. With huge bowls for maximum aeration and thinly drawn stems to prevent warming, these perform so highly they're employed in luxury restaurants all over the world. Their exaggerated angles and fine crystal construction mean they look as impressive as they perform, something any wine lover will appreciate when it comes to the unwrapping.

MORE DETAIL

As all serious wine buffs know, when it comes to choosing premium glassware, Riedel top the list. Founded in 1756, these glassmiths have been making wine glasses for over 250 years, and that expertise is evident when viewing or using their celebrated glassware. We've chosen their Extreme Cabernets as they're specifically designed to enhance the characteristics of full body wines, ensuring an unparalleled sensory experience for those most popular reds.

The Extreme moniker is due to their exaggerated profile. The large bowls are designed to mimic polished diamonds and their wide angles allow plenty of room for the wine to breathe and aromas to develop. The size of the bowl emphasises fruit, smooths out the tannin's rough edges and bitter qualities and allows the wine to achieve balance. The thin stems add an obvious touch of sophistication, but also mean they can be held between thumb and finger, reducing the warming effect of skin-on-glass contact, yet offering enough dexterity for control.

Whilst specifically designed to enhance and emphasise the pleasant softness and generally fruity notes of New World wines, they've made the list because they're not just beautiful, but accommodating. Any full bodied red wine will benefit from their generous design and almost as importantly, we think with their large refined bowls, laser-cut rims and slim, elegant stems, they're some of the most impressive looking wine glasses available today.
