Experts Say

Toyo Steel toolboxes are a marvel of design and functionality. Each box is meticulously crafted - The Outsiders

Why It Made The List

Winners of the Good Design and Long Life Design awards and responsible for 70% of all toolboxes sold in Japan, Toyo are a heritage brand making beautifully designed products. When compared with the iconic ST-350, the compact T-320 offers a more portable option, better suited for tight spaces and less complex organising jobs. Like all their products, it's made using deep draw technology, from a single piece of pressed sheet steel. This reduces rust, sharp edges and the opportunity for breakage, but if none of that has demonstrated why they made The List, just look at them. Exactly.

MORE DETAIL

When it came to selecting a classic toolbox for The List, there was only ever one brand in the running. Japanese brand Toyo have been making tool boxes since 1969 and after 50+ years, they know a thing or two about tidying. Their engineering expertise has won them both Good Design and Long Life Design awards and ensures that 70% of all toolboxes sold in Japan today bear the Toyo name. Amazingly, they're crafted from a single sheet of steel, which means no seams, sharp edges or rusted joints. They're practically indestructible and with a little care, they'll last decades.

These T-320s are similar to their Y-350 counterparts (also on The List), offering a similar amount of space for organising tools, brushes, pencils or trowels, making them a great companion for craftsmen, artists, gardners and DIY enthusiasts alike. Whilst the Y-350 sports a cambered top (chiefly for aesthetics), these flatter versions employ a simpler shape, one that's more appropriate when space is at a premium. The design is also more traditional, evoking thoughts of mid-century lunchbox designs. As any Toyo owner will tell you, that vintage styling offers a classic, retro aesthetic that brightens up any workshop, bookshelf or kitchen countertop. If you want to give them something handsome and practical they love and use, you could do a lot worse than the T-320.
