Experts Say

Weather-resistant Expedition Field Notes are great if you’re writing in wet conditions - Wirecutter (The NY Times)

Why It Made The List

All Field Notes notebooks look great, but these are particularly striking. A hi-visibility “Antarctic Survey Orange” front cover paired with a “Polar Night Black” back cover and subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica. But the really fun thing about these is the paper: Yupo Synthetic paper, resistant to water, tearing, acid...the list goes on, as does the testing they've been put through (even an expedition to the South Pole). The popular dot-graph pattern has then been added to round them off and provide a truly unique gift for any anyone prone to a bit of adventure.

THE DETAIL

Field Notes 17th quarterly edition; bright, bold and virtually indestructible. FNC-17 marked the start of Field Notes' fifth year of Quarterly Editions. In that time, they had explored a wide variety of covers, colours and printing techniques, but with this new Expedition edition, for the first time, they actually expanded the type of paper used in their notebooks. It’s maybe not even fair to call it paper. The whole book is printed on Yupo Synthetic paper, an amazing tearproof and waterproof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia. We could go on and on about the notebooks’ durability and incredible properties, but it's much easier to simply watch the video above, which documents the twelve tests Field Notes put them through.

Months of development and testing were required to get these books just right and while the majority of customers may not test their limits, the map of Antarctica is neither hyperbole nor coincidence. Field Notes sent the Expedition edition to the South Pole with explorer Ben Saunders back in October 2013 as he and his team retraced Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated journey to the Pole and back, on foot and unsupported.

Note: Synthetic paper is nonporous and does not absorb ink like conventional papers. Ballpoint pens, pencils, or fine tip Sharpies work best for these.
