Why It Made The List

One of the coolest brands out there and this is where it all started - the original kraft memo book Aaron Draplin printed on a toy press back in 2007 (with a small revision or two). Bound with premium quality "Packing Brown Wrap" paper to give that nostalgic, eco-friendly feel, while "Dachshund Nose" black Toyo ink adds the stark visual contrast the brand are so well known for. These are mixed 3-packs, containing one graph paper, one lined paper and one plain paper, so you're covered whether doodling, taking notes or crafting that perfect Sunday shopping list.

THE DETAIL

Founded by designers and fashioned by expert craftsmen, Field Notes are a company who live and breathe every detail that goes into their notebooks and stationary. These mixed 3-packs are the very heart of their product range, representing the first notebook produced by hand almost 20 years ago.

It's worth clarifying, these notebooks are small and slimline, measuring only 3½" × 5½", but that's why they come in three packs and offer the delightful satisfaction of finishing one, then starting another. We've selected the mixed pack here, a perennial staple for fans of the brand as it offers three different types of paper on which to write or draw (graph, lined and plain).

In a Wirecutter test of 70 staffers, they found these notebooks feathered and smudged the least of any tested, even with heavy inks.

Like many of the ranges, they're proudly printed by the good people of Service Graphics, Inc., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. in the USA, contain 48 pages and are bound by a rugged three-staple saddle-stitch process.

The cover is made of French Dur-O-Tone 80#C "Packing Brown Wrap," with a thick, brute force, 1-color application of "Dachshund Nose" black soy-based Toyo ink.

The innards are Finch Paper Opaque Smooth 60#T "Bright White," with a fine, 1-color application of "Double Knee Duck Canvas" light brown soy-based Toyo ink.

Although the founder hand-cut the rounded corners on the original prototypes, corners are now precisely rounded to 3/8" (9.5mm) by a CRC round-corner machine.
