Experts Say

Designed in Copenhagen and Made in Solingen, Veark stands for the highest quality with its knives, which are all unique - GQ

Why It Made The List

We're excited about this new addition to the line up: German engineering and award-winning Danish design, drop-forged in a town that's geographically trademarked for knife-making. What results is a unique, eye-catching package that will be used daily. As gifts go, that's a pretty good mix. A 58 HRc hardness rating means it'll keep its razor-sharp edge and a 30° symmetrical grind means it's suitable for left or right-handers. Add unique, individual patterning on every handle and you've made the perfect gift for anyone who likes to spend time in the kitchen. Another objectively Good one from Veark.

More on VEARK

THE DETAIL

The CK20 is part of Veark's fully forged collection, drop-forged from a single piece of steel by experienced craftsmen in the historic knife making town of Solingen, Germany. The town is so well known for knife-forging that like Champagne, Chianti or Parma ham, use of its name is protected; an effective trademark that ensures quality and origination standards are upheld.

The CK20 is the traditional, utilitarian, long-bladed chef's knife that does the lion's share in the kitchen. Most chefs will attest that a good knife of this size will do 70% of the cutting work. It's therefore essential that any cook has at least one good chef's knife. Great knives are designed to offer comfort and balance in the hand, are made from high quality, durable steel, and are forged to a precise level of hardness that enables edge retention without chipping or breaking. As may be expected from Solingen engineering and Danish design, the CK20 offers all these attributes in one very attractive package.

Each knife is expertly crafted by experienced bladesmiths, using a single piece of stainless steel. The design removes the need for joints, making the knives more hygenic, easier to clean and exceptionally durable, with less chance of breakage where the blade would normally meet the handle.

Its blade is 20cm long, sharpened by hand to just below 30° (both sides combined) and as with all Veark's forged knives, is fully symmetrical, so 100% suitable for left and right-handed users. (For sharpening tools that can be adjusted, set the angle to 28° for the best result (14° per side).)

Veark state they studied how professional chefs hold their knives when developing the open handle: a wrench inspired design that invites you to slide your thumb onto the blade and grab it right at the balancing point. This adds stability and a firm, more precise grip, as well as looking great in your kitchen knife rack.

Sharpness and durability are key considerations for Veark's designs. The typical Solingen knife has a hardness rating of 55-56 Rockwell. The PRK10 achieves 58 Rockwell, which means improved sharpness and greater longevity.

As a final aesthetic flourish, the drop forging process leaves each knife with an individual pattern on the handle. A beautiful detail that makes each piece unique, while serving as a reminder of that handmade, expert craftsmanship that went into its making.
