Why It Made The List

Designed in 1934 and regarded as the world's finest pencils ever since. Made from Californian Incense Cedar and premium Japanese graphite, these have been praised by legendary Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer and Academy award winners including Steinbeck, Sondheim, Bernstein, Capote and Chuck 'What's Up Doc' Jones, who used his Blackwings to create Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes. THE DETAIL

Blackwing are quite simply the best pencils ever made. Famous exponents have included everyone from John Steinbeck to Truman Capote and Quincy Jones. Chuck Jones created Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes with them and Shamus Culhane (of Pinocchio, Snow White and Woody Woodpecker fame) even asked to be buried with his Blackwing. Sets of the original lines sell on eBay today for hundreds dollars and their fanbase is so strong, their fervent appreciation ensured the range was brought back from discontinuation in 2011.

Ideal for musicians, woodworkers and anyone who prefers a soft, dark line, the Blackwing Matte is the softest of the four core Blackwing models. Made from renewable Californian Incense-Cedar wood and combined with a very high quality graphite core, each pencil features a timeless matte black finish, iconic square Blackwing ferrule and black, replaceable eraser. This set come unsharpened in a 12-pack gift box that also doubles as a pencil cup.
