Experts Say

Made with a sustainably harvested American hickory handle, and the head is hand forged as well - Outdoor Empire

Why It Made The List

You pick up the Journeyman and it’s clear this isn’t a toy — it’s a proper pack axe built for the wild. The hand-forged C50 steel head carries the weight of 180 years of German axe-making heritage, and the finish is so clean it catches the light like forged metal should. With a 680 g head and a handle sized just right for one- or two-handed use, it’s eager to split kindling one moment and comfortable carrying in a rucksack the next. The American hickory handle feels natural in hand, and the included leather sheath makes it simple to strap on a pack. A genuine woodsman’s tool that manages to stay compact — reliable, solid, and real enough that you’d use it at camp or hang it on the wall with equal pride.

N.B. Subject to 18+ age verification on checkout (OneID) and delivery (Royal Mail)

MORE DETAIL

The Journeyman is a versatile all round hatchet from Helko Werk, sized for everyday woodwork and light camp use while carrying the finish and balance of their Classic line.

Its head is hand forged from C50 high grade carbon steel, oil quenched and tempered to roughly 51–56 HRC, then ground and polished to a bright finish that reduces cutting resistance and helps protect against rust.

The cutting edge measures about 8 cm, and the 680 g head gives noticeably more striking power than smaller hatchets while staying manageable for controlled work.

Total weight is approximately 1 kg, making it a capable tool that still travels well.

The handle is crafted from Grade A American hickory, chosen for straight grain and strength, fitted with a wooden wedge and steel ring wedge, and finished with linseed oil for a secure, natural grip.

At 50 cm long, it offers a longer swing for deeper cuts yet remains easy to guide for finer shaping and limbing.

This blend of forged steel, polished edge and well balanced hickory makes the Journeyman suited to kindling, small splitting, branch trimming and general outdoor or garden tasks.

A premium cowhide leather sheath protects the edge in storage or transport.

With roots dating back to 1844, Helko Werk brings its long standing German axe making tradition into the Journeyman, creating a dependable, hard working tool with a refined feel.
