Experts Say

These notebooks were my constant companions during the years of writing Is A River Alive?; always there in pocket or pack - Robert Macfarlane

Why It Made The List

Field Notes’ Summer 2025 limited edition 3-pack is a collaboration with celebrated British author Robert Macfarlane and artist Stanley Donwood. Inspired by Macfarlane’s book of the same name (Is a River Alive?), these memo books feature Donwood’s “Meander” linocut artwork, rendered with layered UV varnishes and embossing on Sappi McCoy Silk covers. Inside, 48 pages of “Cloud Forest Gray” graph paper await your notes and sketches. Two covers mirror the U.S. and U.K. editions of the book; the third showcases the original linocut. It’s a tactile, visual journey — a notebook set that flows with purpose.

MORE DETAIL

Field Notes’ 67th Quarterly Edition, Is a River Alive?, is a striking tribute to the power of nature, storytelling, and design—created in tandem with Robert Macfarlane’s latest book of the same name.

The set includes three memo books, each featuring cover art based on Stanley Donwood’s hand-carved linocut “Meander.”

Two match the U.S. and U.K. editions of Macfarlane’s book, while the third showcases the original artwork.

Covers are printed on Sappi McCoy 100#C Silk and enhanced with a mix of matte, gloss, and reticulated UV varnishes for texture and depth.

Inside, each book holds 48 pages of graph-ruled “Cloud Forest Gray” paper, printed on Domtar Lynx 60#T stock and bound with three gloss-white staples.

The build is signature Field Notes—precise, durable, and satisfying to use.

Beautiful, useful, and layered with meaning, this edition channels Field Notes’ ethos while nodding to environmental urgency, artistic craft, and the simple act of writing things down.
