Why It Made The List
Big, confident and deeply absorbing, this is the kind of book you can lose hours in. It charts car design from early experiments through to modern icons, moving cleanly between eras, marques and ideas. The emphasis is visual, with drawings, photographs and sketches showing how forms and ideas actually evolved, rather than just showing you the results. It’s as much about the people and thinking behind the shapes, as it is about the badges on the bonnet. As Sharp Magazine concisely summarises, “Simply put, this is the best and most complete single book on car design.” A vibrant, seriously rewarding volume that earns its place on any car-lovers bookshelf.

MORE DETAIL
The Atlas of Car Design is a global survey of landmark car design, organised geographically and then by decade.
It's written by Jason Barlow, with Guy Bird and an introduction by Brett Berk.
It profiles more than 650 cars from over 190 manufacturers across more than 30 countries.
The book includes vehicles from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Citroën, Ford, Toyota and Lamborghini.
Individual cars featured range from early designs like the Ford Model T and Citroën DS to modern icons such as the Porsche 911, Ferrari F40, McLaren F1 and Tesla Model S.
Coverage spans more than a century of automotive design, showing how technology, culture and regional identity shaped different eras.
Imagery combines period photography, studio shots and original advertising to show form, proportion and design detail.
Published by Phaidon in hardback, the book is designed as a visual reference as much as a historical overview.
It runs to 568 pages and measures 290 mm by 205 mm, giving enough scale to study the form closely.
