Why It Made The List

We think these are the coolest in the Field Notes range - a collaboration with the incredibly popular "59 Parks" print series. Every pack contains three memo books, each celebrating a different U.S. National Park. We've selected Series C here, which covers Yellowstone, The Rocky Mountains and The Great Smoky Mountains; three of the greatest, with superlative cover art to match. Inside are 48 pages of premium graph paper, a brief history of the park and a space for the park passport stamp, for the day you finally make it over there.

Cover stock: A variety of French 100#C papers, some with a few burly hits of opaque white under process cyan, magenta, yellow, and black soy-based Toyo inks.

Cover printed: two passes through a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 40" 6-color printing press.

Innards: Finch Paper Opaque Smooth 60#T “Bright White,” with a fine, 1-color application of “Green Earth” soy-based Toyo ink.

Bound by: a Heidelberg Stitchmaster ST 270 5-pocket saddle stitcher.

Corners roundeding: 3/8" (9.5mm) radius with a Challenge round-corner machine.

Graph grid: 3/16" × 3/16" (4.7mm × 4.7mm).

Memo book dimensions: 3-1/2" × 5-1/2" (89mm × 140mm).

The National Parks range perfectly embodies Field Notes' identity; incredibly well made stationary with vintage looks and an obsessive eye for detail. This series is a collaboration, using individual artwork from a range of artists employed in the "59 Parks" initiative, capturing the grand majority of parks in the U.S. system.

The covers themselves are printed on a variety of coloured 100-lb. cover stocks from the French Paper Company of Niles, Michigan, using a custom, five-colour process that started with under-printing white ink. This allowed Field Notes to incorporate the colour of the paper into the artwork (we told you they were obsessive). The illustrative styles, the printing process, and the copper staples recall the heritage, and archival promotional materials and publications, of the National Park System.

As mentioned above, this set covers The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Rocky Mountain National Park and Yellowstone National Park; three of the most famous in the country. Each cover is illustrated by a different artist (listed below in Product Specs) and within, detail is provided on the history of each park. Each book also includes a spot for the official National Park Passport Stamp on the inside front cover, making them as interesting as they are collectible (read: bloody great gifts).

When it comes to paper stock, you can be sure Field Notes know what they're doing. Here they've chosen 48 pages of Finch Opaque 60#T marked with a 3/16" graph to record plans, routes, notes, and memories. Corners are then precisely rounded to 3/8" (9.5mm) by a CRC round-corner machine.
