Experts Say

Designed in Copenhagen and Made in Solingen, Veark stands for the highest quality with its knives, which are all unique - GQ

Why It Made The List

With a German/Danish founding partnership, it's no wonder Veark are known for their innovative mix of forward-thinking design and high-quality engineering. Although based in Copenhagen, their knives are crafted in the world-famous knife-making town of Solingen, Germany. Drop-forged from a single piece of stainless steel, they're reassuringly heavy, yet small enough to meet the multitude of intricate tasks paring knives are designed for. A symmetrical grind makes them suitable for left or right handers and with their comfortable, eye-catching handles, they're an essential kitchen tool for anyone who likes to cook.

N.B. Subject to 18+ age verification on checkout (OneID) and delivery (Royal Mail).

MORE DETAIL

The humble paring knife is the unsung hero of any kitchen. Its smaller size lends itself better to work requiring precision and dexterity, so for mincing, shaving, slicing, dicing and peeling, it's very often the right tool for the job. This concept of appropriateness is critical for Veark. Their designers have crafted a shape that befits the most essential tool in the kitchen arsenal, using a shape reminiscent of spanners and wrenches to emphasise the utilitarian nature of their job. Whilst this makes for the unique, striking shapes Veark have become known for, it also serves a more useful purpose. The slimmed down handles offer greater control, with the chef able to place his or her thumb alongside the blade.

The company is headquartered in Copenhagen, but their knives are produced in the world-renowned German knife-making town of Solingen. Solingen is so famous for its knife industry that, as with Champagne, Tequila or Scotch, the place name is trademarked. To name and market under the Solingen moniker, knives must be made there in totality and be of premium quality, so the fact Veark produce their cutlery there tells you something of their pedigree.

Each knife is expertly crafted by experienced bladesmiths, using a single piece of stainless steel. The design removes the need for joints, making the knives more hygenic, easier to clean and exceptionally durable, with less chance of breakage where the blade would normally meet the handle. The process also lends every handle its own individually textured pattern, rendering each one unique and offering a great talking point when it comes to gifting.

Sharpness and durability were key considerations for Veark's designs. The typical Solingen knife has a hardness rating of 55-56 Rockwell. The PRK10 achieves 58 Rockwell, which means improved sharpness and greater longevity.

All Veark's forged knives are fully symmetrical and 100% suitable for left and right-handed users. Blades are hand sharpened to just below 30° (both sides combined), but this can be manually adjusted by the user with additional grinding if required.
